Inside Out 2 : Movie Review

Updated: Jul 4

In 'Inside Out 2', the movie portrays anxiety as something we can learn to manage. The story follows Riley, who faces new challenges as she grows older, including the arrival of Anxiety and other new emotions. These emotions take over Riley's control center, leading to moments of worry and uncertainty.

When "Inside Out 2" begins, Joy continues to lead alongside Sadness, Anger (voiced by Lewis Black), Fear (voiced by Tony Hale), and Disgust (voiced by Liza Lapira) inside headquarters, a bright tower in Riley's mind. Where they monitor Riley on a large oval screen as if they're behind her eyes. They oversee, manage, and sometimes disrupt her thoughts and actions using a control console resembling a sound mixing board, which adds diffrent buttons as Riley grows up. At the end of the first movie, a new button labeled "puberty" appears mysteriously on the console; in the sequel, it transforms into a blaring red alarm.

Puberty brings challenges for Riley (played by Kensington Tallman) in "Inside Out 2. Nearly a decade has passed since the first film's release, but in the movie's timeline, Riley celebrates her 13th birthday with braces and acne. New emotions led by Anxiety (voiced by Maya Hawke), Anxiety takes control of both the console and Riley, assisted by Envy (voiced by Ayo Edebiri), Embarrassment (voiced by Paul Walter Hauser), and the wearied Ennui (voiced by Adèle Exarchopoulos). Despite these struggles, the film offers valuable tips on coping with high anxiety levels, emphasizing the importance of thinking positive thoughts about yourself like 'I am a good person.'

Directed by Kelsey Mann, this sequel primarily focuses on Riley's nerve-wracking experience at a girls' hockey camp, A trip that separates her from her parents while introducing new friends, emotions, and decisions. Like the first movie, the story shifts between Riley's inner world and her external experiences. Her new emotions lead her through worry, complaint and embarrassment, while Joy and the older emotions face humorous challenges along the way. Throughout, the filmmakers guide Riley toward emotional well-being.

For parents and young viewers, especially those going through puberty, the movie could have positive effects. It shows how to navigate difficult emotions and reminds us of the importance of emotional wellness. Unlike typical teenage dramas, Riley's journey in 'Inside Out 2' avoids more mature themes like romance or rebellion, focusing instead on her growth, mental health and the support of her family.

Inside Out 2' encourages viewers to understand and manage their feelings, making it both entertaining and educational.
