Renaissance": A Film by Beyoncé- Release date: December 1, 2023
Beyoncé's concert film "RENAISSANCE: A FILM BY BEYONCÉ" not only takes the superstar to new heights in her career but also provides an intimate look into the personal aspects of her life. The film transcends the boundaries of a typical concert documentary, showcasing Beyoncé not just as the best performer of all time but as one of the greatest vocalists alive.
Beyoncé opens up about the inspiration behind her record-breaking Renaissance album, revealing a deep personal connection to her late Uncle Johnny, who passed away due to AIDS in the late 1990s. As she reminisces about Uncle Johnny and the house music that he played around her which served as the inspiration for her Renaissance Album released in 2022, the film beautifully captures her love for him, particularly highlighting his profound influence on her musical journey. In her song "Heated," Beyoncé pays homage to her uncle's by singing, “Uncle Johnny made my dress,” referencing the high school prom dress he designed for her. Beyoncé further shares that her mother and Uncle Johnny personally crafted her costumes during her early days in Destiny’s Child. This was during an era when, as she recalls, "mainstream designers were unwilling to dress "curvy Black southern girls."
The film is painted around this prominent moment in her life and successfully makes the connection between her Uncle Johnny, The dress he designed for her and memories associated with him while creating her Renaissance Album and world tour. This personal touch adds a layer of emotion and authenticity to the film, showcasing how her familial bonds and past experiences are woven into her artistic expression today.
The Renaissance film also highlights many queer creatives involved in Beyoncé’s latest world tour. In the film, Beyoncé expresses her hope that the music from Renaissance will bring attention to these talented individuals, stating, “My hope was the music from Renaissance would lead to some of these beautiful legends getting the flowers they deserve.” Beyoncé's commitment to celebrating diverse voices and talents within the entertainment industry is showcased heavily throughout this film.
Beyoncé herself explains, 'Renaissance is the culmination of four years of planning and dedication. I didn’t want to hide the effort to make this all happen.' The film doesn't hide from revealing the challenges Beyoncé faced – battling a knee injury while juggling the responsibilities of motherhood. The lights, the stages, and every moment of the tour are broken down to a million decisions, all approved by Beyoncé herself. A interesting moment in the film shows the pushback Beyoncé encounters. As she faces individuals telling her that what she's asking for can't be done, she reflects, 'I feel like, being a Black woman, the way people communicate with me is different... Everything is a fight. It’s almost like a battle against your will. Eventually, they realize, this bitch will not give up.' Beyoncé's endurance in advocating for herself, as she fights for her creative choices, is a primary focus of the film.
You even see Blue Ivy suggesting to her mother that she's being too much of a perfectionist.
The film provides a backstage pass into Beyoncé's life as a mother, delivering a heartwarming experience that deeply resonates with audiences. One of my favorite moments in the film occurs when Beyoncé faces technical difficulties on stage, when her microphone cuts out. Quickly, leaving the stage to address the issue, a small voice in the background screams, "MOMMY, MOMMY" This moment shows a side of Beyoncé often overshadowed by her celebrity status. In those moments, she goes beyond her glamorous image and shows that, at the end of the day, she is someone's Mother. Her behind the scenes footage shows how deeply involved she is in her three-children's lives.
I was particularly moved by her reflections on her time in Destiny's Child, highlighting the growth she has undergone, not only as a performer and artist but as a woman It's a testament to her journey, reminding us all of the strength that comes with humility and the importance of acknowledging those who have played pivotal roles in our lives. In the film, Beyoncé speaks about her former group members, expressing admiration and appreciation for them Additionally, she reminisces about her hometown of Houston, Texas, and reflects on how far she has traveled since her childhood. These moments highlight the genuine gratitude and love that Beyoncé has for the people closest to her.
Beyoncé's story serves as a powerful reminder to work hard, stay humble, and honor those who have contributed to our journeys.Leaving the theater, I felt a strong sense of determination to pursue my own dreams. 'Renaissance' is more than a concert film it's a celebration of artistry, resilience, love and the driven spirit that's has created a global icon.
